Can I travel to Turkmenistan by myself, or is a guided tour mandatory?
For a tourist visa, a guided tour is mandatory — that is the visa rule, not our policy. The visa is only issued on the back of a booking with a tour operator, who arranges your letter of invitation, and outside Ashgabat your guide travels with you. The only independent option is a transit visa: 3–7 days (usually 5) to cross the country between two neighbours, no tour or LOI needed — but approval is unpredictable and the route is fixed. A private tour is the closest thing to independent travel: your dates, your route, your pace, with a guide alongside.
Are these private or group tours?
Every GÖL NOMADS itinerary is a private tour of Turkmenistan — there are no fixed group departures. You travel with your own guide and driver, starting on any date at least 21 days ahead.
How much does a Turkmenistan tour cost?
